I have never had the luxury of being able to strike to abuse it just be cause "I want more money and I dont want my pension cut like every body else" is being a bit unfaire on those that foot the bill. The private sector has made changes to cope with the situation and the state pension age has gone up to 63 I think (I hope I am still climbing at 65 )

I want more money but I know I will have to work for it and it may never come or I will have to change my job.

Is the 30 July a school day if so there will be many that will have to stay at home to look after kids and lose a days work.

It currently 65, but is going up to 68 at some point.

I think in time retirement will be a thing people used to do.

Why do teachers need to retire????

Is marking books and standing at the front of the class not possible at 65+??????????????

My father is 70 in march and still works almost full time as a joiner.

Why does anyone need to retire?

Surely they should be grateful to drop in their tracks and have the harness cut from their corpse?

Part of the difficulty with the employees of the state is that it seems to be so hard to get rid of useless staff.

I recall an instance where a teacher at the school where my mother in law worked was given a glowing reference so that they could get rid of her. She was a terrible teacher, but they had no physical way to fire her.

There is a popular consensus that the state carries quite a few of societies more useless characters, and to some extent that might well be true. However, what can you do with them if you can't fire them, and they can't function in a competitive corporate environment? I should stress that I believe this useless minority to be just that - a minority!

My wife is a specialist remedial teacher who has already contributed to her pension for over 30 years and was due to retire in 5 years time at age 60. She now has 10 more years to work and contribute to her pension. Even though she is a specialist teacher her salary is less than the "average" teachers salary touted by the government.

So you can understand why teachers are up in arms here are the figures released by the government for this mythical "average" teacher (ann salary £37795) if retired in 2007.

Ann pension £17840

Lump sum £52540

Under the governments proposal

Ann pension £8585

Lump sum £0

Under the governments proposals my wife would not even get back her contributions paid into the pension scheme.

the problem with the public sector is that there is alot of people at the top making lots of money for doing very little across the board no one should be paid more that the prime minster eg the head of our loacal counil gets over £300,000 why (having worked in the public sector and private and now self employed )

That cannot happen!!!

If you have paid into a final for however many years they will receive that % of final salary and then get the new pension for the remainder of the years they pay in.

Nice in theory but not what the government is proposing hence why the teachers are up in arms. Originally the scheme divided the pension pot by 80ths under the government proposal the pot is divided into 100ths.
