Climber or Arborist?

I used to be a tree surgeon. Someday I might be an arborist. For now I'm a climber.

This is a question I've often thought about posting here previously. In the past few months I have mentioned to folk that I am a tree surgeon, and they take it to mean that I only know how to cut trees and nothing more. By telling them I'm an arborist it allows them to understand there's a lot more to it.

 

took the words straight out of my mouth treesurfer! We got to let the public know that we do more than cut trees down.

 

I dont know wether i can call my self an arborist or a tree surgeon yet, as i have only just recently started in this game (and part time too)..2 months to be excat. maybe after a year or two i will feel comftable with calling my self one.

My take on it is:

 

If you are a climber, your job description would mean you should only be taking trees down and removing dangerous limbs.

 

If you understand how a Tree works, what happens when you do a correct cut, what happens if you do an incorrect cut , then you are a tree Surgeon.

 

If all of the above and you have an understanding of what is happening or can diagnose problems with ailing trees and can advise remedies or preventative measures, and have a more advanced knowledge of how a tree works. Then you are an Arborist

 

..and if you know sweet fa about trees and just do as the customer asks and lop the tops of this that and the other, then your a Tree Butcher

I'm a climber,clients tell me what they want done.I suggest an alternative,usually they say no,so I climb and reduce/thin/fell.

 

Mostly any of the above is done from a rope,so I'm a climber.
