Germany give hornets full protection status but in the UK they're not protected, if their nests are a present danger, (I may also be incorrect.) But there's plenty of pest control specialists advertising to destroy nests. So I reckon they're not on the protected list.

I don't think I've ever seen so many, I see dozens daily! Has anyone else seen an increase?

they seem to be nesting in the windblow rootplates ,when we butt them off and the root drops back they go mad,the problem is you cant make a quick get away on a windblown site covered in brambles .In answer to the question yes there do seem to be more than in previous years.

I am not so fond of hornets after today, while cross cutting for the processor I found myself set upon by the bastards. Was stung 6 times before I made leap with saw n legged it. Couldn't see the nest in the stack so took a look round the back and found this:ImageUploadedByArbtalk1412362785.737980.jpg.3f1a08677233fa2ba7ed5da2af32a975.jpg

Never seen one so exposed

especially when I was cutting along a river bank a few weeks back, cutting a hazle tot off and a dead alder pole fell out the middle which had a hornets nest in the end (unknown to me) after 12 stings I ran with them following me:thumbdown:

I had a wasp nest in the hedge we reduced today. But it was quite a wet day and they were very dopey so we just moved it into the field next to us. Only so 4 or 5 wasps, would they have started to die off by now?

Seen hundreds this year, started off with a nest in a bird box and for ages now they have been busy amongst the apple trees.

is that a small apple or a large hornet
