I really don't get all the fuss. I wear all round protection and yeah there hot but I can get over that. They are there for my protection but work positioning still has to be spot on. I have worked with climbers in the past who wouldn't even where chainsaw trousers, they climbed in jeans. All using the heat and movement restriction line. It is the same as the helmet issue. I have also worked with climbers who refuse to wear a bin lid and get into the tree wearing just defenders and no eye protection... WTF? Personally I find the visor/glasses stops me getting twigged in the eyes and as for the helmet, that should be a no brainer...

IMO In both cases if you get used to them and adapt your style to best suite then there shouldn't be a problem.

This is just my opinion and people are free to do as they choose, as I am sure they will. :confused1:

I would always wear type c even if you dont have to im used to them and although they may not fully stop a saw you will more than likely keep the leg you hit.

No protection no leg left.

.

There not that dangerous :001_smile:

I find type c bad in the tree but really bad when your grounding, the weather has been S**t this year but still there has been plenty of days where its stilll too hot to wear them.

Maybe I work too hard :001_tongue:

I use type A stretchairs in the tree. I'm the boss so I'll make that decision, and its in my health and safety policy if anyone ever bothers to read that far!

The guy that climbs for me wears stihl hyflex, type C, and I'm glad he does. NOt sure if I would make him wear them but I'm happier that he does as he's my responsibility too.

My main gripe is chainsaw boots in the tree! Are there any statistics to support it? I don't know but really how can you cut your foot when climbing.

I'm talking about 020 use only, for big saws maybe its worth it, but I see so many americans wearing fabric boots like scarpa's etc. Honey brothers sell them but I can only use them for silky climbing and thats quite rare.

I believe that the better work position and general increased agility around the tree from wearing such boots is more important then the chainsaw protection.

Its a similar argument to the type A less heat fatigue argument.

Are you kiddin' mate....? I started climbing years ago and as a novice I climbed all the time, everyday, in ballistics with an 020....I cut everything with the chainsaw, no handsaw..I knew no better.....I have been in some weird positions cutting round my feet, between/ undr my legs you name it.....The rules are there for peoples protection....this is no exception IMO...I have personally stuffed my saw into my foot.....BOOTS WORK!!!!

As for the heat fatigue argument, there may be some merit in this...( again, in my opinion...) I know the yanks have a very different take on this issue. I know I feel safer with trousers than without, but a pair of lightweight chaps would probably suffice in most situations and be a godsend during the summer months....Its a case of managing risk but first it must be adequately identified.......
