David, I know what your asking here, and NO as unreal as it seems there is currently no protection specific to ancient or veteren trees, even within SSSI sites there is no specific measure for the protection of them in managment schedules.

SAC (special area of conservation) assures some more worthy protection, I think there are only 6 designations in the uk.

Althought the 4 trees in question are located in the historic parkland they are early mature and only planted in 1960's.

I am interested to know why there are no protection for ancient or veteren trees. When clearing for development I am always delighted that if there are ancient and veteren trees in the path of a proposed pipelines or new pylons the deisigners will change the path to save the tree. I have never so far had any moral dilemmas in realation to ancient or veteran trees, I think far more ancient trees get removed during domestic works than developement works as they have their environmental responsibility thats in the public eye.

You could always put in a request for them to be TPO'd, if you think it's expedient.

Can you though?

I have heard this from tree officers (one in particular) who was of the opinion that if you wanted to see any LA contract work you have to tow his line and grass any client wanting to do anything the TO wouldn’t approve of.

As a service provider if you receive information from a (potential) client it should be held in confidence. If you pass that information on leading to that client’s wishes being frustrated you could find yourself facing an action for the recovery of losses. It’s unlikely that a private punter would go to the expense but a developer might and when on the stand facing perjury the witness will more than likely feed you to the dogs.

In either case there goes your client singing your sins from the roof tops.

trees are a renewable resource. so long as we are planting, then no guilt. do you all have active replanting programs? if not get on it. the woodland trust will provide free trees for you to plant on private land. pm me for the north west regional contact or look up the head office online. if you're cutting every day and not thinking about this then i think you're missing a fundemental dimension of awareness and should rethink.

veterans i strongly believe should be protected. i believe it is each and everybodies duty of care as professional in the industry to be actively watching out for and responding to unscruptulous development.

Dave, if it's a historical parkland then the chances are that it's in a CA or the trees are protected.

The only other thing I can think of is covenents, like the pop in Orell or on x Council houses.

Its agricultural land with some old barns in Colne, they are to be developed and there are a few trees in the way, not CA or TPO, but the ground is classed as Historic Parkland.

You have to be careful, these modern day tree officers slap TPO's on trees just cause their bored or having a bad day

I agree that we should be guilt free chopping down most trees.

If we are chopping and replanting everything other than veterans then we will surely run out of them at some point? Even the best protected stuff will go eventually
