Found this today at the base of a larch. Not too clued up on birds but my guess is a wren. Not sure if it's a youngster or not.

Looks more like a robin and definately a juvenile. If it is a Wren it was a very lanky one.

tis a wren, looks like a youngster

Too big for a Wren. Its legs are too long. And although it has an uplifted tail to make it look like a Wren the markings on the wing suggest it is a Robin and Wren juveniles are little furballs for about 6 weeks when they have hatched.

Cute little Hobby hawk chicks, everybody say "AAaaaaaaah"

FTR these pics were taken while assisting a licenced RSPB handler in ringing duties.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was convinced it was a wren 'cos there's quite a few flitting about. Or maybe a lot of young robins:confused1:

You were right the first time - it's a juv Wren. Legs are deceptive as Wrens often 'squat' down and are longer than you think, watch one next time it's bobbing. Juv Robin would also lack the eye stripe.

Andy C - great pic, rarely see a Hobby down here let alone a nest. Great task to undertake, even better if you got paid for it!

Check out the size of this bad boy. It borders a commercial shoot that i beat on. We have a bird called "Bandit" which is a Reeves x Common pheasant. I think this maybe Bandits twin. I took the picture about 100 metres away with my camera on full zoom (hence pixelation).
