Which of the 4x4's can pull 3.5t?

The limit for a ranger is 2800kg.

all im saying is people think they can tow their max limit and then carry there max limit at the same time as filling all the seats with people is ok as were all lead to believe that in the specs etc, but if you get a pull by vosa it will be differant. they go of gross train weight and weight on each axcle. we were nearly over weight by just towing our limit, if we was to fill the cab with two more lads and the pick up bed wich you'd of thought you could do we would of been well over. im not starting an argument.

if i'm pulling a 3.5t trailer i really wouldn't want the back of the truck to be empty, been dragged backwards down a hill before and it wasn't fun. where possible the tow vehicle should be loaded

 

I agree with this. We bought a new d22 navara in 2002 because it was rated for 3 tonne towing . I got rid very soon as it was terrible with any trailer on loaded or empty. Most pick ups weigh about 1700kg and have leaf springs. The larger 4x4 weigh 2300kg have coil springs on the back and are a bit more forgiving when towing.

Loading and decent brakes.

 

A longer towing vehicle will compensate for other shortcomings, but won't cure them.

 

The best towing vehicle I have ever driven is a Volvo FM12, much shorter and lighter than the 45 foot triaxle trailer it towed, but seemed to work just fine!

On the defenders the GVW is 3.5T, the towing max is 3.5T and the train weight is 7 tonne so to be over you have to be over on more than 1

With the 4 tonne air brake conversion, will you be that much better off by the time the extra weight has been added to the tow car (reducing its capacity) & the trailers weight increase due to the added brakes & strengthening. So unless they also increase the train weight the bit extra that can go on the trailer is lost on the tow cars capacity.

 

A bit like the 3 axle trailers actually carry less than the 2 axle ones.

I agree a longer wheel base makes a towing vehicle more stable but most lwb's have more rear overhang putting the tow hitch futher away from the rear axle.This gives the trailer more leverage to push your back end around when turning.

 

Also having the tow ball closer to the rear axle means the trailer doesn't move up and down so much on undulating ground.

 

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is weight tranfer.By using an adjustable height tow bar you can transfer say 500kg on to the back axle of the towing vehicle to give traction and stability.

 

So the best 4x4 that i have found for towing 3.5 tonne off road and on is the defender 90 but needs more power, comfort ,seats,payload and load space.
