Its scary at the power of mother nature. With a quake that big how long will it be before Mount Fiji is set off? It doesnt look good for the nuke reactor though. There is the potential for another Chernobyl blow out or if the whole lot goes up another Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Either way it doesnt look good for the locals. Soon after the tsunami recedes there will be lots of diseases in the contaminated water.

Japanese officials warned of two possible radiation leaks today as authorities battled to contain rising pressure at a plant crippled by yesterday massive earthquake.

Thousands of people within a six-mile radius of the Fukushima facility were evacuated as radiation rose to 1,000 times the safe level and pressure grew, fueling fears of an explosion.

With growing tension at the plant 150 miles north of Tokyo, a second state of emergency was declared as pressure rose in two reactors at the facility.

Earlier officials had proposed releasing radioactive vapour into the atmosphere in a bid to prevent an explosion after its cooling system failed

By all accounts it is a light water plant so cannot strictly speaking explode like say Chernobyl but that is in no way to remove from the seriousness of the situation

 

Ahhh didnt realise this, as usual everything i have read in the mail and Sun have been doom and gloom. perhaps i should read a more hi-brow paper! :001_rolleyes:
