. No one should work for free, and I couldn’t and wouldn’t have anyone work for me and not pay them. It would be demeaning to them and me An honest days pay for an honest days labour has been a principal fought for, for years in this country. What you decide to do with time you make spare is totally different..

I suppose if you offer to work for free to show your'e keen to do the job and show your ability then thats fine.

As for an employer asking people to work for free for any extended period, (ie.more than a day or two) thats not really on. Also if the employer is satisfied you are up to scratch and gives you the job i think it only fair that they back pay for your free days. Thats what i would do anyway but im a vary vary vary nice man:sneaky2:

I volunteer one day a week at a local arboretum to learn more while I'm at college. They gave me 4 cans last week for helping out I was buzzing :thumbup1:

I know people in the conservation sector that have volunteered for years before getting paid employment,

Im not saying this is good for the sector as i believe it leads us to having very low wages for the skill many of us have, but it seems to be the accepted norm for this sector, finish uni/college and then volunteer for a year or two!

I've been volunteering since i left college (over 4 years ago). Since ive been volunteering ive been getting training that has been paid for on my behalf. So I add to my CV. It gives me much needed expierience in the sector which is needed in almost every job i apply for.

Would any one do the first couple of trees for a client for free in the hope they would get the job and then maybe discuss the price after wards. I mean that puts the boot on the other foot.

The first step I took into being "Self Employed" from farming was a huge beech tree that had blown over due to the council mending the highway and damaging the tree roots. (National Trust site)

No current firms would touch the work and I did it for the wood which I made into products and firewood:001_rolleyes:

Had more paid work following this and continues now.

(This was before the chain brake)
