Surely the answer is all three and it depends on the situation. Nobody would fell a tree all in one if it's next to a road with a greenhouse on the other side and various buildings, but by the same token why would you section if it's in the middle of an empty field?

well it is really, why would anyone chog down if there's room for the fell and no bowling green lawn to protect..... This has always puzzled me

A couple of reasons people may give could be practice, if they don't do a lot of climbing they may wish too get experience or avoiding catching the ground with the saw.

Ok...Sorry everyone, didnt want to come across as rude etc, just I love a good fell, my eyes light up when its on the cards, and the tighter the gap the more fun it is and the better the feeling when you see in down in exactly the right place - does anything beat that feeling????

take it down in as bigger pieces as is possible.the less airbourne sawdust the better

I like a good stiff breeze while chogging down, it shares the saw dust betweeen neighbours, it's only fair, after all they're all getting more light.

 

Normally find it spreads it that thin there's not a lot of cleaning up to do.
