i agree, these are great cars - if your aiming for something cheaper look at a volvo 850, loads of extras and they can be £300 to £500 with high miles, don't be scared, they'll go round 3 times :biggrin:

 

Had a '96 850 tdi last last year too. Lovely car, but started to show it's age at 215k. Again, unfeasibly economical for a car of it's size. We averaged 44mpg including a fair bit of town driving, and got 53mpg coming back up from Derby to Edinburgh on the M1/A1, heavily loaded. Pretty respectable for a 2.5 litre 5 cyclinder engine (an Audi lump actually).

 

Speaking of, the Audi 100/A6 2.5tdi is also another to look out for. We have the 100 2.8E Quattro, so economy isn't fantastic, but the diesels are great. Quite sought after these days though, as the subsequent A6's that replaced them were thirstier and slower.

VW TDI (in 90, 110, 105PD, 115PD, 130PD variants) does intergalactic mpg in golf size cars; I had a Y reg Golf TDI90 that used to do 74mpg without difficulty! The 110's were the most thermallly efficient lumps on the road as proven by an in-depth IDGTE and SMMT study.

 

But yes, the Astravan / estate 1.7 cdti is superb on juice.

 

If you do the maths you will find they are not that good, yes there economical but I think your getting those figures from the on board computer and they are not very accurate. I have owned 4 Audi's and just recently sold a 2008 s line 2.0 TDI 140bhp. They are sorer on the juice than the 1.9 130bhp which I had before it but even with it to get a good mileage out of a tank easy driving was needed.

Yes they are good but VAG owners get a wee bit carried away with how good they are because of that fuel computer which has been proven to be a a bit on the generous side.

Have you thought about getting the Rangie lpg converted?

 

Okay, so the mpg won't improve, but the cost of the fuel would go down by about 40%.

 

Alternatively, what about something like this - better mpg, still 4x4, not too dinky:

It is gas converted but as it I'm probably getting about 22-28mpg equivalent, I'm still looking at getting double that plus cheaper insurance hopefully, and also a car that isn't always needing something doing to it!!

The 1997 P reg 110 TDI Audi A4 I had didn't have the computer displaying fuel consumption, so calculations were based just on refills at the pumps. One of the most notable journeys was from Edinburgh to Somerset and back again, fairly heavily loaded, definitely not doing 95mph :001_rolleyes: but returning 48mpg.
