Groundies

I think this is going to be an interesting thread. For a long time I have seen and heard Climbers talk to the groundies like they are some 2nd grade citizen. There often seems to be an air of big headedness from the climber as they think they are better because they can/will climb.

 

I think a good groundie providing they are good should be paid accordingly. obviously only if they are worth it, but a good groundie that can carry out all that is required of him from the climber and more besides is worth it; I know groundies that can operate chippers/lowering equipment but are also qualified to drive 18 tonners and operate huge Hiabs/ forwarding kit while over seeing the chapter 8 traffic management these people do deserve to be noticed.

And why not? some of the companies i work for the groundies get practically as much as the climbers.

A good groundie is worth it, some just don't fancy getting in the harness, does this mean that their pay should never progress beyond a certain amount or reach the level of a standard climber?

A good groundsman will make a bad climber look good but a crap groundsman will make a good climber look bad.

 

once the climber has cut the lowered bit, its up to the groundsman to bring it down safely and smoothly.

I knew it was tongue in cheek, still i felt like raising the point.

There is more to a career in arboriculture than climbing. Groundsman are an essential part of the industry as you said.

a good groundy was normally a good climber in his earlier years but i do know of alot of good GOT's (there you go dean)

who have barley used a harness in their life

but if im on the floor i expect to be the goundy......... does this mean climbers will becom COT's??? (climbing operation technician)

 

What about a Ground Operations Arb Technician or GOAT?

 

God knows I've had to work with some goats in the past!

i think there should be a nptc for being a groundie. i know there is in a way ie chipper cross cutting ect but think of all the people who come out of college and think there are going to become a climber straight away.

 

You should be a good groundie before becoming a climber then IMO.
