Skidding cone?

Further to winching timber out of our sloping wood, a little reading around, and the opinion seems to be in favour of the use of skidding cones. This seems particularly so in USA/Canada, but I found a couple of positive pieces from the FC.

 

However, a quick trawl of the usual uk purveyors of forestry shiny things did not turn one up.

 

Anyone any opinions on the value of using cones, and any vendors in the UK that you are aware of?

I've never hurd of let alone seen a skidding cone. Had a quick google now. Not done much slope skidding but i can see how they could be useful. Are you getting a lot of damage getting the logs up to the landing then?

was reading a book at college while back, how to convert your farm tractor for the forest or summin like that

 

had a bit about them in there, they seem like good ideas, and to be honest i dont think it would take long to knock a few up out of summin, maybe a few tyres or some old roofing tin?

I gave up looking and used the ends of an old goosed canoe. Handy for short wood bundles, wide base so less ploughing and a whole canoe gives 2 "cones" for circa £50. Try an outdoor activity spot or fleabay, my last one came for nowt, but they had cut holes in it for bit to repair other boats.

Canoe....great idea. We are right in the heart of a load of activity centres. I'll ask around.
