Have you guys tried using sawdust, wood chippings etc??

I'm not so sure on the paper idea, but woodchip and sawdust might burn a bit better.

I tried one of those compressed sawdust blocks the other week, the one wrapped in waxy sort of paper that you light at each end.

It burnt slowly once it got going, very little heat output and after a while it disintegrated into sawdust which just sparked and fizzled out into a black mass of useless dust.

A £2.75 waste of money, luckily I got it for free along with some other samples of wood fire combustibles.

I wouldn't touch those firelog things with a bargepole mate - full of all sorts of chemical muck to keep them going. Proper firewood briquettes contain nothing but wood, and don't need anything added to make them burn.

A fair few people choose wood because of it's eco friendly credentials - the "light one end and retire" logs are anything but....

PS - I know some people who have used sawdust etc as an added ingredient - but you still need the paper and water to make everything stick together - the compression you'll achieve with these is a few pounds per square inch - briquette machines operate at around 80 tons per square inch from memory - bit of a difference!

can't understand why those sawdust log things are so expensive

Its a waste product / doesn't look like or burn like a log/ cost extortionate/

I would pay about 30pence a log if I didn't have my own wood - that price would seem about right- about 300 ecologs for £100- yup- that's about right

If you buy direct from the manufacturer they are cheap the problem is all the middlemen who keep adding there 200% markup until you get a product costing more than real logs.
