Exactly!

Do we need to be in an organization?

Actually, I must admit, I am in the AA, sorry to let the side down chaps.

Been a member for years now.

I used to be a member then I thought I'd get AAA, when I read the criteria I was appalled, it is more like becoming a franchisee than joining a trade organization, I let my membership laps

The council can simple draw up a very tight specification for all contractors, which states all the requirements, H&S , waste control, etc, its not rocket science.

This will open the work to far more contractors, more competition, better prices, OUR money will go further, so more work can be done or maybe lower council tax!, no sorry I'm being silly now.

Quite right, its blatant disregard for the fundamental of local government that is called "best value".

There are plenty of top firms that do not need the AA as much as the AA needs them to feed its coffers.

who wants the crappy council work any way!...did it for 11 years in some of the worst estates and holes imaginable...when a 7 year old is trying to sell you crack and smack you dont know weather to laugh or cry! that and every body moaning about how long its taken them to get there trees cut down and goes mental when they only granted a 25% reduction instaed of the 60 % they wanted and the old people in EPD's moaning that they want every thing thing in sight cut down you realise why england has become such a baron land in places.....nope your AA contractors are welcome to council work.

Lots of local authorities and some larger organisations are now using the 'Constructionline' or 'CHAS' scheme as a databse of pre-qualified suppliers or any trade. They can then view your latest H&S stuff online as you need to update your details annually and these are then scanned in for all to see. Some do ask for AAAC or ISO but its not the norm, and even if you don't have it you can usually argue that you have an equivalent system but its not accredited. I do believe in Quality Assurance systems as they give you an independant assessment of your firms stregths and weaknessesd and where its at legally. As for bringing in more or better work I'm still not sure.
