Your boss has likely been in your position earlier in his life and now wants to kick back and enjoy the proceeds of a sucessfull built up business. Keep his overheads to a minimum and pay his employees an average wage.

Unless you offer something indespensable to him, then its unlikely he will want to up it any if he can pick up another climber at a similar rate.As has been said a labourer without any qualifications who can graft all day and sort anything thrown at him is an asset you want to keep.

If you are staying on to do jobs like maintenance or coming in early for no real return, stop doing it and have more family time or do some jobs on the side.He then might see your value.

Otherwise start up on your own, or find another employer. Sub yourself out for work.

Good luck with whatever you try.

Hi there I have seen alot worse with compnays and what they pay there climbers. As an employee you will allways pull less money then if you are self employed .

as you are using there kit ,trucks, chippers and have money 5 days a week paid into your bank also holiday pay ect .

. I am self employed and pull in between 100 and 200 per day with all my own private customers but for that I have to provide all my own kit PPE van ,fule and the job is compleatly on my head so if anyting goes worng its me that has to take the can and replace any kit if it breaks and all the rest of it that goes with being self employed plus I have to go and and find my own work so I have to do all the donky work with leaflet dorps advertizing and pulling in my next days bread.

When I am subbing working for other companys I pull in between 65 and 70 a day as a grounds person with all my tickets for grounding climbing cutting and am really happy with it and go home with a big smile on my face each day . I would also climb my hart out all day long for that amount tree after tree and be delighted .

Remember your gronds person on the 70 a day has the less fun part of the job he has to do all the hard work for you and clean up all your mess dragging and chipping so he may only get 8 quid less but boy he would have to work for it .

I think to sum it up if you have a nice bunch of fun lads to work with and overall you are happy and you get paid on time and get ppe given to you then you are onto an OK deal . some companys will pay more some companys will pay less either way you have the best job going its just fun all the way up the tree every day rain or shine . If you are really unhappy then you might want to consider going self employed then the sky is your limit with your earnings .

All the best

Hmmm, still not convinced. If ever I have to employ anyone for saw related work (as in not just a brash dragger, but someone required to operate a saw) I just can't bring myself to pay less than £100 a day. I think that especially with the number of experienced folk around, that people will work for so little. At the end of the day, it might not require a large amount of qualifications to get started in, but arboriculture requires skill, concentration and hard graft. Getting paid less than £100 a day seems insulting, especially when you consider the number of mickey mouse jobs people do for more money.

I think if you aren't able to competitively quote for work and pay yourself and your workers a fair wage, you need to look at streamlining operations or diversifying. Fair day's wage for a fair day's work.

My 19 year old climber/ground who I employ on a 0 hours contract has just asked for a pay rise!

At the moment he is on £6.50 ph, he only does easy climbing jobs as I get a contract climber in for the hard stuff as my lad only has a years experience. He works hard most of the time but at times let's himself down with his attitude and punctuality. I have put his wage up to £7.50 ph as I value him but I will not be held to randsome.

I hope with the rise came a condition that punctuality and attitude improves, or a review will be in order

Yes, I basically told him I expect a certain standard, and the better his work the more chance of a better wage. Alot of young people expect top dollar without having to work for it. I know it's a bit different but I just had a plumber fit a sink and loo, he did it as a foreigner and charged 15 quid per hour! The loo is leaking as he only siliconed it to the floor instead of screwing it, the sistern is loose and the Rawls plugs are hanging out. Some peoplethink they do the nptc tickets and that they should be on a 100 a day!

Good point Big J and good on ya too for upping pay levels for your guys to what you think they're worth :thumbup1:

I know folk labouring on building sites who aren't the sharpest and are being payed £80+ per day. They've no quals, no experience and have no responsibilities on site other than to provide basic general labour. Meanwhile well qualified arb guys&gals who've invested time & money in they're training and kit aren't earning as much.

Goes to show how competitive things are in our line of work I guess....

p.s. I'm not complaining - I love my job whatever it puts in the bank.
