Myself and my business partner are responsible for culling deer on several farms on exmoor, this happened months ago and has only just been released. There are also several versions of the story floating about, which I wont go into on a public forum. yes it is ashame that a large red such as this was shot, but he was out of his prime. Quite a few of his offspring over the last couple of years have been week and plagued with problems. I do not agree with the way it was done, but to keep quality of stock (currently around 3000 and rising) on the moor it will probally be for the best in the long run. On a positive note, there are a known number of younger stags about that will, if not already, be larger than this one.

Theres probably a lot of embelishments to the story to exploit peoples `bambi` instincts, cause agro, and sell a few more papers.

You dont really want a dominant stag putting its genes into a herd for more than a few years otherwise it will be procreating with its daughters, desease and deformity will pass into the herd to its detriment.

Good management focuses on the herd, not the individual. An old stag will have well worn teeth that make feeding difficult. It will eventually die through malnourishment.

On the upside, those passed on genes will ensure a fit healthy herd with some magnificent beasts to come.
