weve had our d22 do the same thing, nice big hole in the engine, 80k miles and 7 years as a workhorse used seasonally so march-september heavy loads and long distances. £1600 to fix that one, thats why we purchased the defender to replace it. 7 years was long enough for it. my hilux did 9 years of the same work and now only just needs a rear diff. Shows the reliability. although we had very few major problems with the navara

 

good luck with your fix, we are still trying to find a new engine.

 

My d22 did 90K before the conrod failure, used daily for towing trailer loads of chips and timber averaging 2 tons, average mileage per day - 50.

 

Others put a conrod through the block under 50K miles.

 

There's still a bit of mystery surrounding NissanUK's approach to replacing engines.

 

Mine was 6 months outside the extended 5 year warranty yet they decided I was gonna get a new engine, no reason given. Wasn't gonna get too involved with them, just thankful they said yes. I was looking into replacement engines and fitting totalling over £5000.00

 

They definitley look at service record, wether you've ever owned a Nissan before and how you approached them with the problem. Many people with D22 conrod failures under warrantly failed to get new engines. No-one really understands NissanUK's decision making process behind the whole thing and probably never will either.

 

There are UK companies selling low mileage Japanese import engines for the D22, loads of info at NissanNavara.Net

 

Beware though, have heard a few horror stories of people spending fortunes trying to repair the D22 engines using mechanics that dont fully understand what the problem was in the first place.

well the truck is going into nisan next week and we will wait and see what they say , i have heard from so many people that have had this problem , it makes you wonder why nissan are so tight on what they replace - thankfully the service book is spot on and the truck is in good condition , the most gutting bit is that we were looking to trade it in within the next month of so as the missus has her eve on the new mitsi evo - WELL that will have to wait lol

I heard that the problem was the head gasket going , letting water in that then hydrauliced the engine, bent con rod etc.

 

Is that the case or is it something different?

i was considering getting a navara pickup as i currently own a old school D22, but due to con rod issues wrote it off, however i did do some research about them, and if memory serves me correct nissan have extended the warrenty but "have not told anyone" ie its not widely known and some dealers have told people that the warrenty is not extended yet some say it is. from what i remember i think i saw it on watch dog not 100 percent sure.

 

engine numbers prior to :YD25DDT 1219661 were the motors with con rod issues.

 

get snooping on the interweb you could be in luck

When we asked Nissan about the problem with the D22 it gave us this statement:

 

"Nissan is absolutely committed to quality both in terms of product and customer service and, as such, has openly stated for some time that the durability of a small number of D22 pickup engines, produced before August 2006, have not performed to our exacting standards. As a result, Nissan launched a five-year 93,000 miles extended warranty in May to formalise the support we were already providing to our customers. If any customers have concerns or questions regarding their D22 please contact us via a dedicated e-mail address: [email protected] or call us on 01923 899 334."

nissan have extended the warrenty but "have not told anyone"

 

Everyone recieved a letter from Nissan showing the extended warranty.

 

The problem was with the big end bolts - metal elasticity issue. The failure always seem to happen in the 3rd chamber.

 

Combined, dont harass them, they'll drop you and your Navara like a ton of bricks - I didn't even call them for a a couple of weeks after I put my d22 into them.

 

If they ask you if you've ever owned a Nissan before say yes, just tell them you own a Nissan Micra for 5 years and have forgotten the Reg plate.

 

Also send away for brochures for the new Navara or the Cabstar today , this shows up on your file and makes them think your keen on Nissans. I repeat, do not harass them. Nobody likes a problem customer and remember they legally dont have to give you a new engine.
