In this country the Humbolt gob was not used much because of the value of timber left on the stool, and the then difficulty in tushing the timber out by horse and dodging high stools. Allowances were made in the hoppus feet measurement to allow the gob, whereas in many foreign parts where tushing was by skyline, a high stool did not matter and a square cut log was better for the mill (more volume).

Many people have preferred to lift a muff at a critical time to hear the fibres as well as feel the fibres pull. Older tree people may be hard of hearing but they can lip read (except their wives) especially when a beer is pulled!

Skills with an axe should be correctly taught before the use of a chainsaw imo. You can knock in a wedge with an axe - but you cannot do that with saw!

My grandfather had an Uncle who had a 14lb felling axe which he used before the 1st World War!
