Do you recall if the ground was very waterlogged prior to the failure, Mario?

 

The photo file says December, and December is generally the month with the most rainfall.

 

Also, I don't think the roots were substantial enough on the west side (it fell to the east). I was expecting to see more light colored spots in the root ball where more roots had broken off.

 

The soil looked pretty darn good though.

I was lucky enough at the weekend to witness a beech fall over of it own accord. It was at the highclere country game fair on Sunday evening, not a breath of wind, I was eating dinner at a burger van (healthy) and heard a massive crack and turned around to see the tree coming over. A massive crowd ran towards it to see if any one was under it as there were a few tents nearby luckily no one was hurt. Went to have a look at the point of failure and found a nice included union and a small patch of kretzschmaria .
