someone once told me it might shorten the lifespan of the saw.. but who cares when its cutting fast..?

Why would it? With a simple muffler mod you are just opening up the restricted flow of gasses. Which will actually cool the pot & piston down

extra stress on the conrod/crank with faster acceleration i think was the excuse, to me it makes it more betterer an stuff..

When opening up the exhaust be sure to check the fuel mixture / re-tune the carb, as you usually end up with a saw that is running slightly leaner due to increased air flow.

Lean saws run hotter and good possibility of seizing.

porting is only relly used in the forests in america,, good for forestry, pointless for tree surgery of fire wod or anything less than forestry

How so?

so wooded, in you're avatar, youre using an 880? do you not see any benifits of using a 460 which would out perform the 880 on that stick?

Any mods which allow an engine to breathe and realise its full potential can only be a good thing. My enduro bike is so much better for it and so are saws.

If a saw's cutting faster it's safer when you need to keep the cut going as the tree starts to fall. And less effort too. Just my opinion!

In a tree if you have the option of more power from the same weight of saw, its a no brainer IMO.

As for only being in the US, not so. There are thousands over here and getting more. I have 4 myself, all tree surgery saws.

I run a 044,361 and two 020t's all modded, well apart from one 020t which has an early model exhaust on it which is slightly different from the new style exhaust, the 044 cuts more like an 066, it's loud though so probably breaks all kinds of Puwer regs but hey, I'll worry about that when I'm sitting on my deck when I'm retired. Saws with modified mufflers run cooler and will be less prone to heat damage from operator errors. Other than a modified muffler you can buy a Maxx Flow air cleaner. After this all you have to do is set the squish, then machine the base of the cylinder. Then take that same amount off the top of the piston about a 1/4 inch from and to the outside of the piston. This makes a pop up piston and gives higher compression and better power gains. Also, you can widen the intake and exhaust ports and match the carp and the muffler to the new port sizes.
