Is it too easy?

Currently CS38 seems a bit too lax for my liking. Perhaps a way around the situation would be to have an assessment for climbing at the end of the course to show you are safe, can look after yourself and would alow you to practice. Then once you feel ready, be it in a weeks time or a year, you book onto a second assessment for the rescue part of the certificate. This could be more thorough and perhaps timed to show real competance. Obviously this would require some working out, but is there something I've missed?

Hi Cooky, i am not condoning working with out relevant tickets in place i am just telling my little stories. In this day and age and with the help of this forum guys shouldnt have to work unsafe and and with out the correct guidance because the information, knowledge and experience on here from all 4000 plus members is priceless, Frank is a good mate and i am having some fun with him and he knows it, i think the best thing any one wanting to get into climbing should do is get up a tree with an experienced climber and get the wits scared out him, same with felling. I have had a lad try to scramble up a cliff face as the root plate started to lift on a big beech just before the hinge gave, i was keeping it held on coz it was a side leaner. He chucked it soon after. Another lad had my video phone coz i was felling a totall one off crazy bendy ash behind a house on a big banking, as it crashed to the ground, pulling off the fell of the century i turned round and he had dropped the phone and done a runner, now i have to add it to my list of awesome crazy stunts with absolutely no proof of doing ha ha:blushing:

welcome to the forum:biggrin:

Welcome aboard Cookie.

Don't mind these two. They are as delusional as their joint replies to my post suggest!

I must admit, Frank, when I passed CS38 first time, I was probably the least likely and slowest person you would want to rescue you.

Arterial bleeding? Forget it.

The weight of your growing hair and nails would have snapped the crown out long before I got to you!

Does any one personal, not hearsay or a friend of mine, know someone who has been rescued or carried out a rescue???????????

I know an instructor/ tree surgeon who told me that in 37 yers of the job he has has to perform one aerial rescue, and that was on a lad on a course that froze in the tree. He knows of no other immediate friends/ coleagues who have performed one.

Yeah and No.

What I wanted to discuss was current NPTC units and training, not "scrap all college courses and who has ever rescued someone".

I want to get in to training and have been thinking about current standards alot.

Surely the likelihood of a skill/qualification being put to use, should have some bearing on the cost and rigor of said qualification??

Thats not an "emergency rescue" the guy could have waited while a climber was brought to site from else where, so no real need to have a rescue climber on site:sneaky2:

Was that the wee hardman with the tats Stevie? I still laugh picturing the scene!

My little mishap with the O2O the other week really bought it home to me. Realistically, if you don't self rescue, you won't be rescued.
