Hating all the threads on stolen gear lately.

So thought I would open a thread on some ideas to help us keep are well earned and worked for gear.

Personally I think the most important thing is to be informed when someone is trying to nick your gear.

Someone with an oxy acetylene backpack and whizzer can cut through all your expensive padlocks in a couple of minutes and set of your alarm but if theres no one there so see/hear it....

So my advice first off would be to buy a GSM wireless alarm. They cost under £200 take less than an hour to install and will text and call you if someone trips the alarm or sets the smoke alarm off.

Its on pay as you go so no costs unless you get a call.

I know Dean has a nice alarm system so hopefully he will explain a bit more on that.:thumbup1:

Any other tips/tricks or good bits of security gear welcome.

I've got my location and my web site which am going to get removed. Other than that all I can think of is investing in a good alarm.

I live out in the country side but have about 5 neighbors close by and they are all retired couples so there's always someone around ( and their a wee bit noisy which has it good points and bad)

Also the dog barks at anyone coming up the drive.

My in laws live about 2 miles from me and they never lock their doors in fact they don't even know where the house keys are. My father in law also leaves his car keys in the car just in case "someone needs to borrow it"

My heart sinks every time I see that someone else has had their gear nicked.

If you put gsm wireless alarm into ebay loads of different types will pop up.

I think this is the one I have, well looks the same but I bought it a good few years ago and there are probably better ones now.

As I intimated earlier IMO making entry and exit more difficult is the key. My old man has always said a lock will only keep your friends out. Make something like Fort Knox and you'll invite unwanted attention.

Low key but really solid barriers to entry that are easy to put in place by your staff but look and are seriously time consuming and/or noisy to overcome means crims may think twice before attempting to break and enter.

Location can play a big part in risk too. Places with just one entry road, i.e. down a long track, can be safer as there is a greater risk of a crim being trapped.

Most people who work in this industry are fairly tough and fit as the nature of the work dictates and we all work pretty hard to get what we've got. I'm unsure whether I'd be keen to go down to my yard late at night to respond to a possible break in, mind you it's a bit of a drive from my house and they'd probably be gone before I got there.

Do what you can to deter casual theft but if organised crime gangs want your stuff, let them have it.

Strange idea but!!....how about getting an old for new policy with the NFU that costs approx £26 a month and then not caring one bit what gets stolen! If your beloved 66 goes missing after 3 years, then you get a brand new one in return. That meerkat is on to something im teling you.:001_rolleyes:
