I have removed dozens of privette hedges in the last 10 years in our town. They are all in one area and were planted at the same time. Some of these hedges will be 80 years old and had a life of folk digging through their roots and washing cars beside them for decades. Some have theories of Honey fungus but i have never come across this in any i have removed. I think its just age.

I agree with steve, esp on the car washing etc front. That stuf cant be good for them, and years of domestic pet droppings etc too.

Is it possible that the drought is affecting the hedge too....you are north west-ish arent you?

I have removed a lot of dead / dying privet over the past few years, from dead sections to entire hedges.

I have seen tiered fungal brackets on some of the stems but it was on long dead sections so I think it is saprophytic and had appeared afterwards.
