Whilst trapsing behind (ahead?) the living text that is Oliver Rackham at Staverton on Thursday I was accosted by this mighty blighter - The Birch Sawfly (Cimbex femoratus)

 

Scary

 

 

and there was me thinking you were there just for the celebrity :biggrin:

 

Shoulda binned the huge entourage and got native with the locals :thumbup1:

 

This was from back in Stav, after hours...............:sneaky2:

A beauty from a garden pond a couple of years ago. I did look it up at the time but the grey matter not being what it was... ideas anyone...? The colour's good; the body really is sky blue, not pale grey.

the green insect had bright green eyes. and the woodland i found it in has a river running through it so i wouldnt have been surprised if it was some kind of mayfly (google search of "baetis" only shows up fly fishing lures haha!).

although this is a crap pic it shows the colour a little better:
