What damage will a railway sleeper pin through a chipper cause?

A railway sleeper pin, hidden in a chunk of hawthorn, went through my Greenmech 19-28 safetrac this afternoon, the railway sleeper pin (hardened steel) was chopped into 3 pieces, smashed the chipper blades & knocked a chunk out of anvil. What other damage might have been created, could the bearings be damaged or the drive shaft warped?

Get it checked over mate, we had somthing similar few years ago and it was serious dollars, the fly wheel was moved slightly but that was on a jenson,

Was it one of those "Pig tail" shaped clips David??

Saw one go threw a tracked Timberwolf once, That was on hire, Caused ALOT of damage. Not sure exactly what as the hire company picked it and dropped another one off.

Have it fully stripped down and inspected mate, Just to make sure everythings covered and something doesnt get over looked and cause problems at a later date.

the last one i heard of cost the guy about 3k on his tracked jensen, the flywheel and shaft was knocked out of line and there was a lot of damage to blades, anvil etc etc. I have also heard of a brand new farmi pto totally killed on its first night when a big track clip went through the side casing. i dont understand why chipper manufacturers dont make a metal detector for these machines, the ones in the big cylage choppers are in the rollers i think, bad news indeed:thumbdown:

I have seen a couple of Jensons in the workshop that have had rail clips ingested, not a pretty sight.

The damage not helped by operators then tracking them half a mile to where they can be put on a vehicle, without first taking the drive belts off the flywheel pulley. :hmmmm:

Apparantly its not an uncommon occurance for these clips to loosen and then a passing train flick them up into the trees at the side of the track.

Thorn trees are usually to blame, so I am told.

The title to this thread made me cringe David! I think Liam has it covered though, it may cost more now but it would certainly be best in the long run, if only peace of mind;

Hope you get sorted and its not too stupid on the cheque book.

It has an uprated drive shaft on the machine, which I hope has helped, maybe a miracle will happen and I will turn the anvil round and put new blades on and all will be fine.:001_rolleyes::001_rolleyes:

if the anvil has been chipped, does this unbalence said anvil, if so surely turning it will have no long term benefits
