Cracked Grapple

Hi

No camera with me so i have drawn it on this picture of the Botex grapple from the wilsons website.

what make is it? ( i think you have just used a botex picture )

i am not sure if it is a botex grapple he has, or he has just copied that pic form jwilsons to use as an example.

 

the reason i ask, if its a botex i would think wilsons would want to know about it and take a look as botex are renowned for being very strong

 

It was from Wilsons a long time ago. It's a bit of a mish mash of bits it a Botex roof mount crane on a trailer apparently. Don't know if its the orginal grapple but i asume so. So i'm guessing it's a Botex grapple.

if you are going to plate it your self i would use 2 dimond shape plate either side of the section of steel but before you weld them on i would grind out the crack and weld it up as well , to do this i would v out the crack and put a route run in before capping the weld off but be sure you have a welder that will happily knock out betwene 200 and 220 amps as you will require a good penetrating weld.

If you do decide to weld it drill a small hole, approx 3mm, at the end of the crack before you start welding it...

 

Otherwise as you weld it you could end up chasing the crack right through it :(

 

 

As above,even if you decide to overplate it,kills the stress at the end of the crack

Seconded - also grind into the crack and weld from both sides
