I’d try and get over how wonderfully clever trees are! Tell them about how they adapt to their surroundings, show them some cross-sections and tree rings, talk about reaction wood (I’ve done the same to a group with a section of Pine, ask them if they know which way it was growing in the tree, when they look at you with a blank expression, show them the growth rings and the reaction growth).

 

Best advise is to find a subject that your happy and enthusiastic about it and go with the flow, you’ll find it much easier that way.

Take em a green log sliced like a big stepping stone,,get em to weight it green,,then again in three weeks time,,educate em about trees liking water,,hence the loss when left to dry,,without roots etc,,,,,im lucky enough to use a pole lathe so useally give em a demo on that,,making them a rounders bat out of a piece of ash,,so they can play with it,,,,,but mabye thats a little advanced,,lol,,good luck,,,

my dad used to be a forest ranger and did a lot with school parties and such

when he was taking them on nature walks he would tell them that adders lived in the area (this got their attention) he would then tell them that if you were quiet the adders would not be scared and would sneak away, but would attack things that scared them (like noisy kids) this worked flawlesly every time and he showed them fox cubs deer badgers and all maner of creatures they would not have seen. (p.s. he did tell the teachers he would be doing this and why first.)

 

the key to the whole children teaching thing is to get their attention at the begining then they will get more from the experiance IMO

 

perhaps you could do something dramatic at the start or tell them that you will ask them a few questions at the end and give them a prize if they are right (might help make them pay attention)

Talk about the bits they cant see like roots,and the size of this structure compared to the tree they can see. About function, structure for stability,how they can lift a wall or pavement,gives them something to look for apart from just the tree.

Might capture their imagination.

How long have you got?

 

1) Trees; definition, types (decid / e'green), CO2 absorb, O2 production - air. Wood - uses. Tree health - leads into tree surgeons which is what you are...

 

2) Disease, size, unsafe etc etc

 

3) Tools of the trade - take all the toys.

 

4) Importance of being trained (maybe some of the children will tell Mom and Dad not to employ uncertifieds!)
