I would answer your response as thus;

my comments were not designed to be or give abuse - you asked a question -I answered it - you may not like the comments but they were not abusive and I dont think anyone elses were:confused1:

- if youve got the time to sit down and teach someone to read and write without charge you dont need money by selling firewood, so leave it to the people who rely on this for their income with employees and families to support to do that - why not set up a business giving advice for bee keepers you obviously have a knowlege of this, give advice to small holders on that, if your set on selling firewood then so be it, were not stopping you, but why should we answer ALL your questions with answers and markets that have taken us years to acheive

Marks and Spencers would not tell Tescos their trade secrets that have taken years to find out themselves the internet can be valuable as a resource tool but its up to the individual to ascertain the correct answers from that information.

As i gave you some advice, buy wholesale off us and retail it - as another said, by a chainsaw, cut your logs and sell as volume - what more do you want?

If you choose to jump on the firewood bandwagon and heaven knows theres alot started recently - be prepared for a little friendly banter - I dont mind competition, by all means, it keeps us competative and gives our customers choice to have a rubbish load from someone else and then come back to us for quality wood:lol:

I thanked those who took the trouble to start me on my way. I feel sorry for those who want to abuse someone doing exactly what one of them told me to do - to search the internet. I want a start not a 'head start'. I am prepared to learn the hard way if thats what it takes but sometimes it is not necessary as someone can help you avoid these mistakes with a friendly word. If you have time to reply with negative comments then you need help of a different kind.

If someone wanted to know how to set an apiary up I would be only too pleased to guide them through this. If anyone wanted to learn to read and write I would spend a lot of time with them - without charge. Where are you coming from? Once again - thanks to those who are charitable enough to give me a little start.

Hell, I'm in a quandry about this one: agree that wanton knowledge giveaway is not sensible but also reminds me of the time I posted a question on pitchcare about aeration times and got an extremely ugly response along the lines of f-off you idiot and quit stealing our hard won work. I never thought arbtalk would get like that. Frankly you could learn enough about firewood on here without even posting a thread!

I feel a bit odd about this thread Logbaron I can understand where you were coming from completley but its a forum If infomation like this was around ten years (the figure I think you said) would you not use it? I would think your a fool if you didnt, ts not fair but tis the morden times im afraid if your not happy to answer his questions then ot someone else will theres no reason why there isnt someone out there that is happy to give infomation with respect chipan is 60 years old im not sure he is going to be the number one log seller in the land and beat your bussines to everyone customor going. And chipan I do mean this with the respect

But Chipan why not start out see how it is if you strugle then maybe come on a forum and ask for advice on how to be more succesful.

Hi,

I am a retiree of 60 who needs to keep active. I would like to start my own log business as I am moving to a house with a little land out in the sticks. I would be very grateful if anyone can help me with a little information before I start. Which are the best value chainsaws, log splitters? What sizes do we deliver in and how can we measure the amount of logs produced. Who are our suppliers - wholesale? Do we use hard or soft wood logs? Who are our customers other than households? What else do I need to know please?

I will always be greatful for any advice given.

Kind regards

David Chapman

well bobbysm instead of dissing my reply - why dont you tell him your ideas for a firewood business - or share any of your knowledge on whatever it is you do.

i was only commenting - and i did not do it abusively

ive got alot of friends around us who sell logs and theres alot of forestry contractors around me who are friends, i supply alot of part time loggers some are firemen etc if they came to my yard and asked a specific question i would hepl them, but i wouldnt go and give tree surgery advice to a lucky heather transit lop and topper conifer man -

my advise in the original reply was that why ask sooo many questions, if your going into logs fine, but shouldnt you have some idea of what your doing? or is this another person we all clap on the back for starting up with no idea how to start a tractor, how to use ptos safely or how to service and check a chainsaw?

the original query from chippan lead me to believe that this was a complete career change/start and he didnt know anything about anything? i will no doubt be shot down in flames for commenting this - but this is where i was coming from in my reply which was meant to be tongue in cheeck and light - with no mallice or abuse given - so dont abuse me!!

we both used the internet at college over 10 years ago to help us through our RFS and HND courses BUT i think to ask lots of generalities to a hardened forestry contractor at that stage i wouldnt of dared , sometimes you need a bit of knowlege to not look stupid i think before asking advice just my opinion
