I bought mine mainly for carrying 4 candidates and kit into the woods. Didn't fancy a double cab pick up.

It's also got the benefit of all the 6 rear seats folding flat to make a bed for when i do the odd trip to the coast.

I haven't investigated on our volvo yet, but hopefully when the deal was done from landrover, he told volvo to improve on the pto design taking drive from front gearbox to rear axle. Had 2 freelander2s and blew the pto drive sleeve on both. Unlubricated components ate splines off driveshaft ends. Known issue but in true LR style refused to address.

Oh , not sure i knew about alot of the of the info when the first freelanders were about but he dropped dead when I was 17 , so that was 1999 I knew about issues with tdv8, v6, and stuff about the freelander one, td5 engines and weird stuff like that . I could walk into any garage , mention his name and get a job within 5 mins .

Not sure id ever touch newer lr stuff now ..

Probably not family friendly enough, but these Suzuki Jimnys look smart.

A mate in Finland has one with an Arb kit and a few other tweaks, tiny load space, a great to drive but not sure how well it would stop whilst towing though.

New, €29k plus one off pollution tax of €22k

The Ford Ranger is now available as a hybrid and is pollution tax free as a result.

Hang on. A new Jimny in France is fifty one thousand euros?

I could believe that!

Tbh, a Discovery isn't a big thing but, they are capable and powerful! Find a good one and you'll love the brand.  Get a bad on on and it could cost plenty but parts are available!
