I didn't need to do any welding to fit the towbar to my Jimny

Op states that the towbar mounting had been cut off by previous owner

All towbars are type approved and have a ce mark. Many years ago we would make them for motor homes and commercial vehicles, but couldn’t make them for cars as all have to be approved. The mounting points are approved by the manufacturer.

If the factory tow points are gone, both options can work depending on your fabrication skills. Making mounts for a standard towbar keeps it MOT-friendly, while a custom one can be stronger if built properly. I'd go with option 1 for simplicity and compliance.

Inspired me to clear a load of crap out of the way and get mine out again. Been sat in the barn for quite some time now but fired right up with jump leads. Battery completely knackered (was fitted with a winch and wasn't powerful enough) so ordered a new one. Drove beautifully. Thought petrol might have gone off but apparently notIMG_20251028_154426982.thumb.jpg.254cb0f213b9017a5fee2f5c0b687c4c.jpg

Thanks, exactly my thoughts.  I reluctantly went for option 1 for this reason.

Apart from that the socket and lights must all work there is only a legal requirement that a telltale in the cab must work in unison with the indicators, to show the bulbs are working, isn't there.

I do wonder how they current sense?

A horrific accident happend local to me a long time ago, I cant remember if the ball came off or the hitch on the trailer, long and short of it a woman got killed after the trailer became detached from vehicle , thankfully the toddler she was pushing was ok.

Shit situation

With an over-run braked trailer the break away wire should apply a brake to all trailer wheels, an un-braked trailer must have a safety chain independent of the tow ball. So something was missing.

The chap I started out on the arb adventure with had previously killed a grandfather out walking his toddler grand daughter by spearing him with a ladder that flew off as he drove round a road junction.

Im assuming the brake away cable wasn't attached or was attached in the wrong place ,it was a shit situation, poorly maintained trailer that once was a wooden horse trailer cut down, from memory it was a quite and old bloke thst caused it

That's going to make just about every conversation about everything in an arb day awkward and depressing. All we do is check the other person has secured something.
