The fact you can balls up a Honda makes me wonder whether we should all have a bit more sympathy with Briggs and Stratton.

I never touched the Briggs ! I broke before I became that curious !

Fitted Loncin engine to my stump grinder after Honda started breathing oil heavy. Straight fit apart from safety switch wiring but got it sorted in the end. just need to check shaft size when ordering metric or imperial.

I changed the carb when I did the head gasket.

I've just had another go at the valves and run it up again.

Runs better but not perfect plus the oil seems to have burnt off.

Now, like a muppet, I stripped the thread of the valve cover so it won't seal.

It's off the my local machine shop to get that sorted tomorrow.

If I'm lucky they might even tune it for me.

These things really should have been taught at school in 1986, I might have paid some attention !

Ask for a tap and die set for your birthday! If you use them gently (oil, fward and back etc) even the cheap ones will work fine to repair stripped threads.

Sorry if you have done this but check the manual for the valve clearances and set them to the midpoint. I find setting valves incredibly temperamental and it often requires several attempts. Normally the tolerances are given as a range, ive sometimes fixed issues in used engines going for the tighter end of the range, if that makes sense.

Bought a good set years ago, while working on old land rover, payed for its self time and time again.

Ah, O.K, I am a bit baffled that there are exhaust fumes coming out of the air filter box when it is countering away on tickover.

My local machine shop put in a helicoil for me.

Something absent from my engine are the guides to show top dead centre so I'm having to guess it from the valve rocker position.

I guess that's the reason adjustments are not working out...

Do you have a piston stop for spark plug hole? If you approach from both sides and make a mark then you can find the middle.
