In the winter of 78/79 when I was living with parents for my first two years at university we had a prolonged cold spell, and snow hung around. I used my mother's 848cc Renault 6 to drive the 10 miles from home. For several days the battery was too tired to start it after a day outside. No problem - starting handle through hole in bumper, choke applied, crank it over, started first attempt every time. No ECU to worry about either😀

Awesome 😎 👍. There's another type of portable jumper that ustilises capacitors. It doesn't suffer from the ills that affect long term idle lithium ion or trad batteries and can be charged up by the problematic flat battery. Unless the battery is completely drained, it will change up the capacitor pack in a couple of minutes. Then it delivers the charger back into the batter in one hit, enough to turn the motor a few times.

They are not super cheap though.

I remember starting a Renault in the snow after a girl had left the lights on for a party with the starting handle it would have been 1969 when the only other cars with starting handles tended to be automatics.

Yes Morris minor could be had new in 1970, dunno about 2CV never played with one. My 1973 LRs definitely had starting handles, not sure when that stopped, my 1990 110 didn't have one. I think my 1967 imp had the shaped hole in the bumper but just a bolt on the crankshaft rather than the spragged orifice .

We've had numerous 2cvs over the years. Right up to the end of production in 1990 they still had a starting handle. Essential for setting the points, though a real cow to start, as the two opposed cylinders give a real kick , and kill the rotation. Easiest ever to start was my v8 landrover 101, - smooth as silk, you'd barely notice the compressions. The lightest flick over would be enough to set her burbling away

I could hand crank the 109 and did for fits and giggles! The twin Lister on the saw bench was okay unless right cold and then I'd use the decompression lever! The 090 Stihl was a tad keen! When I started that prior to selling it, it was okay but, two days later, I couldn't write, hold a knife or wield a spanner!
