It's not crucial anyhow,since the crane will only be lifting a fraction of the total weight since the butt remains on the ground.

Ah right, sever it but don't lift, and just guide it down to the ground.

Yeah, that seems a much less potentially-fatal route.

Whatever the reason as to choosing to climb.

 

The guy was a freelance climber IIRC.

 

Shocking job and badly executed.  I hope he make a full recovery but from what I have read his injuries were life changing.  Let alone the Psychological aspect of climbing again.

 

Bad day for all involved.

I just cannot believe no one on the deck questioned it. 
On a job like that they’d surely be an RA and a method statement. 
Let alone a few guys on the deck with a few years behind them chiming in.
