Ebay cash on collection is no more

Turns out as of 1st October buying & selling items on ebay, for cash on collection, is no more. All payments now have to go through ebay. There may be an exemption for vehicles, certainly for vehicle classified ads.

As a buyer you have to make the payment in advance, before you've seen the item. The payment goes to ebay.

As a seller, you have to release the item before you've been paid, you need to get a "collection code" off the buyer, and then at some point ebay will (maybe!) release the funds to you. The buyer may be able to make a claim and use the money back guarantee to get a refund.

You can't (easily) exchange contact details before the sale has gone through, ebay monitor messages, and apparently they will ban you if you get caught.

I was trying to buy a couple of items off a local seller this weekend, in the end we got him to make another listing for a small item for £1 for collection only, then end the auction early to sell to me, I pay the £1, then get his contact details so I can go round his house and buy the other stuff.

I've been on ebay since I was a teenager, over 20 years ago, bought and sold items for local collection all over the uk, shame they seem to be killing this off

The code on collection system has been in place for sometime. Most of what i sell on the bay is too big for postage so pretty much all is collection. I always ask for payment on collection.....simply because before someone pays me, I want to demonstrate it to them so they are happy before parting with their money....to me, it shows honesty on my part and is reassuring for the buyer, plus its less messier than trying to do a paypal refund should someone in the unlikely event they arent happy.

My phone isnt an android, so the code system doesnt work on it any way. It never used to bother me or the buyer that i couldnt put the collection code in. I always mark an item as payment received, and you used to be able to mark it as item collected. I did note on my last collection i went to mark as payment received which i could but the option of item collected has disappeared, so for the last 6 weeks since collection its still showing as 'now send the item' Im not that worried as i have the cash.

Seems since the changes now the buyer HAS to pay in advance? And you will need that code to work to get your money?

Cash is king and always will be.

It's free to list so just do a deal before the auction ends and remove it.

Then have it collected with payment

They're trying to stop that, they apparently check the messages for contact details. Obviously one way as a seller is have your phone number in the photos, so long as someone else doesn't report the listing

You cant do that effectively as you cannot communicate addresses emails tel numbers etc in normal messages prior to the sale. So if you did end an auction, then both you and the seller wont have contact info so rendering ending the auction for an off ebay sale impossible

eBay lost it's way many years ago, same when it abandoned PayPal.

Then they started those free sites like vinted to attract the yoof, double your operating costs and wondered why your business makes little money, unless they just rely on music magpie and those sorts of volume sellers.

Tried this with a van recently - ended the listing twice so had to pay to relist.

both “buyers” then ceased all contact - wankers 😡

Sold on Facebook sales in the end

EBay never look after the seller I’ve had it in the past selling tools people buy your item use it to do the job then say it’s faulty so you have to pay carriage both ways and they get a free tool hire , Now if you sell an item they keep your money until you request it , How much money are they sat on that’s belongs to sellers ,
