Seeking Advice on Tree Pruning Techniques

Question

Hi ArbTalk Community,

I am searching for some guidance on tree pruning strategies, especially in regards to develop fruit trees. I have a few apple and pear trees in my nursery that need pruning but I'm unsure about the best approach to ensure healthy growth and a good harvest.

In particular, I need to be aware:

Q.1 What are the suggested pruning practices for mature fruit trees, including timing and frequency?
Q.2 How can I identify and safely remove dead or diseased branches without harming the tree?
Q.3 Are there any special considerations or techniques for pruning fruit-bearing branches to optimize fruit production?

Any experiences, tips, or suggested resources would be greatly valuable. Much thanks to you ahead of time for your skill.

Best Regards,

Steve

RHS is good  info:

Mature trees

Q1 See above guides

Q2 By looking at them stuff like dead banches or canker etc are pretty easy to see.

Use secateurs loppers siky/pruning saws tripod  ladder etc to do the job.

Q3 Covered above but  also fruit thinning

I was going to suggest this guy on YouTube, you beat me too it. I've watched a few of his videos recently, after someone else on here recommended him last week. Very good.

Hey @Stere,

I want to thanks to you for sharing these helpful guides. It's clear from the information that tools like secateurs, loppers, pruning saws, and even a ladder or tripod can be handy for pruning neglected or mature apple trees.

It's also good to remember about spotting issues like dead branches or canker easily. Fruit thinning, as mentioned, is an important aspect too, ensuring healthy and abundant harvests.

Hey @AHPP,

Why do you think that I am a robot ? Do you have any proof ?

It looks like a joke Buddy

So don't spread this type of information.

I hope you understand now.

Thanks

AHPP is very ambiguous about the whole robot thing since Skynet sent a robot back in time to kill his mother. Then 11 years later they sent another better one back in time to kill him, ironically the first robot gets sent back as well by future humans to protect him.

All this happened in LA (where you live)

So, you know, he’s a bit…touchy.

In my humble opinion, the original post reads like someone looking for answers to a homework assignment, not someone looking for advice on tree care.
