I think I know where the hedge cutting in June has come from but is there any basis for the 20m?

Them hedges in Sherwood forest look a bit unkept

I reckon it’s an inaccurate interpretation of law protecting hedgerows.

Plus that snippet of legislation is about snubbing out an existing hedge.

Cutting is something of a grey area, more enforced if you're obviously seen to kill a nesting bird or in a stewardship scheme.

I've just looked at our figures with Mrs Accountant.

Despite working at a normal rhythm, the number of new leads for the first 6 months of 2024 has dropped by 60% compared to last year.

My current lead time reduced to under 10 days as a result (though I'm now shut until September)

Percentage of jobs accepted has not changed at around 55%

I could still wind my neck in on pricing in order to win more work but that would lower my margin.

Here, in certain sectors, mostly building and estate agents, there are many more business failures than normal.

I've had a flurry of enquiries before the holiday's but nothing big and juicy, just nibble stuff I can do with my wife.

Difficult to understand the market sometimes. I had been having less enquiries, like most people reported, but it has picked up again. Lead in time is 6-8 weeks, and I am soon going to have to turn away jobs I would normally want, as I anticipate a knee replacement in November time. The surgeon has said he won't tell me I can't climb if I make a good recovery, just be gentle with it. Can't say I have the youth and energy to be anything but though!
