I've rather set my heart on an ms241 as a good all-rounder to keep in my works vehicle for the summer season. Most of my chainsaw work is Oct-March really.

But I cant justify paying close to ms261 money for a new one tbh-its just overpriced imo.

I've missed out on one or 2 tidy ones on ebay due to the vagaries of auctions.

So, I've come across a ms240 on a 2nd hand machinery dealer described as privately owned/well maintained for £295+vat-so £350 odd, which is fine by me.Just unsure when the 240 turned into the 241?

I'm stihl-ms240-chainsaw-a.jpg.112b7c9ed43c66128c27a95cb298f47a.jpgstihl-ms240-chainsaw-d.jpg.8f0e5867ff4474419ad30da636049588.jpgstihl-ms240-chainsaw-d.jpg.8f0e5867ff4474419ad30da636049588.jpgguessing this item is pre 2010,which is fine, also assuming I'd get rubber rather than spring-based av system.Just cosmetically speaking, I'm not mad on the look of the air filter shroud catch which looks just like  the 170/180 setup.Any thoughts opinions would be welcome.

Home owners saw.

I wouldn’t bother myself.  Saying that I would bypass a 261 as well.

I really like the next group up, the 361/362 etc.  now I believe the 400 is the current offering.

the 400 is an awesome saw and more than worth the money.

It's rare that I disagree with the more eminent folk on here, but I disagree with your disdain for the 261, Sir. It's a little powerhouse, light as a feather ( relatively ) and sooo close to the 400 in performance that I sometimes wonder if I should have bought a 462 or 500 instead. You are however absolutely correct about the 400, it is awesome.

I've got a 240, runs a 15" better than a 16" bar but I'm running .325x.063" bar and semi chisel chain a 0.050 chain/bar would be better. it feels like a MS180 but a good one is way more powerful. Typical Pro Sthil saw  in the way it runs, if you have to do any work on it, it's really easy to work on. I've got a MS180 & 036 and I'm a mechanic by trade the 180 & the 036 were what I thought they would be but the 240 is a far better saw than I thought. Of the three it's the easiest and best to use.

240’s going to be old , I’m pretty sure they have not changed since the 024 much… had one or two 024’s and they felt well crap tbh although I  can remember using a 241 when it first came out and would say that was a least 12 years ago , was a different saw in comparison and felt a lot tighter and more powerful and I can remember being pleasantly surprised by it ! Personally I would wait or buy a new 241.
