middle ground firewood tree (growth rate vs burn quality)

Eucalyptus? Not native, but good burning wood, quick growth (very quick), coppice if you choose the right varieties... They drink a lot of water so would dry out ground, don't know how they cope with sodden ground, but mine seem to thrive in soggy South Wales.

Having said that, I've planted a few coppices of euc for firewood production in a paddock - not sure I'd want to plant them in a proper woodland setting, they don't look natural.

cheers for all the replies guys, am thinking along the lines of some eucalyptus (nitens and gunnii), silver birch and some leyllandii to go in early next year but keep the ideas coming!

If it is wet ground I would consider that more than the species perhaps, 100 middle ground trees not thriving or 100 fast growing water loving trees thriving? Wet loving trees - Alder, silver birch as above, and if willow and hazel are going well why not stick to what you know does well?

i like to have a variety of firewood, no real specific reason, also the more diverse i can make the woodland the better but may take some willow cuttings and put around aswell

Oddly doesn't seem to be many nuseries selling cuttings. Wouldn't mind trying some will have to see if any nearby to propergate bits of.

Try the cricket bat firms that buy the timber. When I last sold some to Wrights they sent their own feller and he cut them with no sink. They then supplied and planted the replacement setts.
