Would be rather nice for all of us out of pure curiosity if you answered the actual question I posed in the first paragraph, now we have established that you are a brilliant mechanic/farmer/debater

But of course you are missing the point of my op, I came on to ask a question!!

NOT to be interrogated by the "barking" squad, the boys with all the answers but won't give the answer until they get chapter and verse , or the gardeners with ropes and long poles.

We do ok in the farming yes!! and my small engine rebuilds work out fine.

And I have got the answer to my question elsewhere.

Maybe, if you had started your OP by saying 'I've scored by piston on my relatively new MS291, and to my surprise when I got it apart it had the smaller diameter piston for an MS271, do you think the dealer would have done this as it was already on the shelf assembled, or would it have come from the factory like it?

Wording it like that, does away of any inference of warranty and the invalidation thereof. It also really makes the point of whether a dealer had swapped cylinders or not irrelevant now, as you would be having to pay for a 'correct' MS291 pot and piston anyway due to your error.

Just a thought, eh?

Anyway....

The Manufacturer, in the country where the Serial number begins with 1 , has replied to my email and they have emphatically stated that an MS291 would NOT leave the assembly line with a 44.7mm Cylinder in it. No way, no how.

A simple straight answer without the need for a Serial Number, without the need for me to plead , to beg or to write chapter and verse of why I would ask such a simple (but important) question.

Had I known that they would answer me, obviously I would not have bothered the professionals (the decent replies) on here..... or the shrub clippers whose knowledge simply can't match their mouth

But there's a visit to the dealer yet.... soo I hope everybody will be overjoyed to know that I will come back here and let ye know how it goes.... I'll probably tell ye what prompted me to open the saw.... oh the suspense!!!

I didn't ask anybody about warranty or question the warranty on here, that's the point you are missing. Anyway, another day for the results.

Re my op , I had simply asked a question off the forum, no more no less, I don't understand their need to go into tangents etc when the question was so simply, either yes they had seen something like that before or No they had not, perhaps that made me defensive, they KNOW why the saw was opened , so I was not going into a long story why or who or whataboutery..

Scored piston I read into that.

Hi Guys,

Newbie here , but lots of "farmer" and firewood experience.

I have a query , for all your collective expertise.

I buy an MS291, off the shelf, over the counter , assembled for me as well.

Just recently had reason to strip it and open it. Long story short!! , I discover it has a 44.7mm Cylinder and Piston (OEM) , not the expected 47mm jug .

Soo.... my brand new saw is effectively an ms271 50cc  instead of a 5.6cc ms291. There is also red dirko on the pan and cylinder.

My question: The saw is German made, serial number starts with "1".

Is there any reason, in any set of circumstances, that I should expect to find a lesser engine in the "brand new" saw sold to me by an approved dealership.....?

I have a strong suspicion that the saw was sold and came back almost immediately burned from gas only tank.

Saw still v clean, service guy puts in a ms271 cylinder & piston because the 47mm OEM is very expensive, puts it out on the shelf and the counter boys sell it....... to me, not expecting we would be opening it just a few months later. I'm hopping mad, infuriated.

Your inputs really appreciated.

Jim

I really hope you get your issue sorted and the dealer offers a solution, as a good customer hopefully they will give you a resolution.

Ref Arbtalk - you asked for input in your first message! You shouldn't be surprised you got it!
