Gear oil 🙏🙏🙏

I certainly wouldn't use gear oil, it's probably safer using used engine oil than gear oils, additive laden with anti foaming agents etc.

For about £5 a litre for chain oil - the stuff designed for chains, to go on a £150 mini chain saw - why the discussion about used engine oils, hydraulic oils, and whatever else you might want to use.

I might be able to understand a pro wanting to reduce costs and use economical measures but a 1l bottle or chain oil would probably outlast this saw.

2 or 3 choices here, for the difference in prices whatever you value your time at to read the discussion will far outweigh just buying one of these I reckon. Can even spread the payments with paypal

How so? Isn't it the vapor that is bad for you? Ponsse stuff is just gear oil with an additive apparently.

I'll get my sarcasm sign in future.

Gear oil won't be the same as it's got additives for a reason, EP90 at £9 a litre.

It would last a lot longer than the chain and bar though, especially in winter. :D

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this post. Not sure I am any the wiser, the recommended oil by Makita is ridiculously expensive. Have tried the Stihl chain saw oil which I use on my Huskys but is to thick to oil the chain. Maybe the vegetable oil is my best bet.

With respect, you should be wiser as several, including myself have advised either the stihl lighter bio chain oil specifically sold for your application, or the makita stuff which would appear similar. Those are the correct grade to use....as you have already found out by using regular chain oil which is unsuitable. The fact the correct stuff is quite expensive so you are unwilling to use it doesnt make you less well informed, just that you dont want to spend that kind of money. You should be a lot wiser now.
