To visit the dentist today. All it was was a check-up then a clean and polish. I was in there 10 minutes tops. Think I'll drop back to going every other year if not less.

 

What's everyone else paying? And how frequently do you go?

I really do wish that I had, at least access, to a Dentist in a town of 8000 people.

Could be worse? I pay nothing because I'm broke.

Two appointments per year. Quality has gone down noticeably over 5, 10, 15 years. If I lost this NHS dentist I'd be doing home dentistry because there's zero NHS dentist availability in Cornwall.

The high prices are probably linked to how many people miss appointments (my dentist is on the rocks because of this) and because so many people who are well-off enough to go private choose not to.

Obviously nobody should have to go private, but something is obviously broken if we have rich people getting NHS care while any number of poor people can't even get a dentist or doctor appointment, let alone afford to pay for it.

Just got on to a NHS dentist today, only because I saw on a local fb page that the dentist was taking on new clients. The reviews and rates look ok.

Yep, the Dental Service is broken, like lots else besides.

 

Mine is private, but only because I used to pay almost as much for an NHS one, with a crap reputation. There wasn't much choice besides. It's the old cliché but it's a real postcode lottery, with very few winning tickets.

I was paying about £35 for a check up and polish every 6 months when mine was NHS, He went private about 2 years ago and its now £90 for the same. He runs a scheme where you pay £12 a month direct debit to go towards the cost. Last time i was there i needed a replacement filling which cost £370

We've been to the same dentist for over 20 years, originally NHS but went private so we're on a 15 per month type deal as above that includes checkups.

 

He is about my age, I often think when I go there he's been sat in this same room looking at teeth for all these years and really that's it for career progression, he's got another 20 years in the same room to get through before he can retire.

 

Dentist is on my list of jobs I am glad someone does, and really glad it's not me.
