Monkey Puzzle ....

A while back I obtained some lumps of Monkey puzzle , the pics show the chainsawed block before mounting on the lathe and then the completed hollow vessel ( approx 10" x 10" )    it sands and polishes well !!  these pics are about 2 weeks apart  to allow drying as wood was green when started ....

Lovely. Interesting grey staining. I'd've guessed at early fungal decay, but you said the wood was green to start with. ?

I read somewhere that turners like monkey puzzle to be cut down in January and stored upright, otherwise the sap causes grey discolouring of the wood. Could probably be the cause..

Good knowledge.

I like the discolouration actually, it adds to the visual appeal.

The tree was dead standing for over a year , and yes the staining will be a sort of spalting / blue staining as is common in white conifer wood once dead / felled ...

green ...as in not fully dry ...though it was pretty wet inside still

Are not worried about the shrinkage now?

I had a lump...still do. Kept it inside a black rubble sack. Out of the sun and allowing it to dry so slowly so It could make a bowl like that. 
That's what I was told at the time.  It was 10 years ago. I'll get a pic later it's in the back of the garage where monsters and old Landy bits lurk.
