Hi, I was visiting friends in Shrewsbury, Shropshire last week and knowing my interest in woodlands they asked me what type of tree this is near their home. I was totally stumped.  Have posted 7 pictures. FYI - the photo taken from across the river shows the mystery tree's size - its the one to the left of the seating bench. Does anyone know what this tree is? Thanks, in advance.

There is a cut leaved alder; I have one in the garden.  I think that's a good shout

Is that its typical growth pattern? Starts off with alternate leaves then becomes very much one sided.

Thanks to all for your ideas and suggestions. Very much appreciated. Having looked up all the suggested trees and comparing them to the photos I have I think the most likely candidate is the Alnus Imperialis (black alder imperialis). Cheers!

No idea; mine's only about 5' tall!
