A few years ago I was brushcutting a load of bramble with a shredder blade. Came to an area of nettle, saw an old white football in the long grass/nettle. Knocked it out the way with the brush cutter head and carried on. Something shot me in the hand, and then again in the side, I thought I must have caught a stone. Then my eyes focused on what was directly in front of my visor as opposed to what was down at the brushcutter head - hornets!! Loads of them. I've been stung by wasps and bees before, but these hornet stings were something else. Clearly the 'old white football' was not such, but rather a hornets nest.

My groundy was stung by a European hornet, said the pain was fairly epic!

I got stung the other week by one of those small wasps. Back of the neck. Within a minute my face and neck had swollen and i had an itching in my throat. My whole body came out in hives.

 

I've always had fairly bad localised swelling from wasp stings but this was something else. Took a handful of antihistamines and felt rough for the rest of the day.

 

Emailed my Dr who's referred me to get an allergy test and given me a prescription for a pair of epipens.

As I understand it Mick they dont sting like an ordinary wasp but rather slash with a saber like stinger .

Im still waiting for dr appiontment 5 days after my experience even though i have told them what happened

Ironic thing was I was all jelly legged up a ladder trying to foam the nest whilst these chinooks were coming in and out.

I instructed him to keep clear so he was 20 odd meters away.

One just left the nest and headed straight for him, bang! Straight on his temple, then away, so you could be right.

I know they’re overworked and there could be a long wait Joe but if that happens again you should consider a trip to A&E, neck swollen and itchy throat is heading into the danger zone😳

Luckily my doctors are pretty good so you can fill in an online form explaining your situation. The receptionist called me within 5 minutes asking if i could come in that morning. I couldn't as i was at work so she told me the doctor would call me at some point that day. Very impressive. I was expecting to wait forever and lose a days work.

I'll pay it by ear next time. I'm better prepared now anyway.

I've found 12 wasps nests so far this year, all within a couple of acres on brambly south facing slope. I think they're in old tree stumps mostly. I've been clearing around young trees on the slope, only been stung once but serious paranoia... Hard to get away quickly when the vegetation is waist to head high! I've never known so many.
