What constitutes a spurious wood chipper blade

Hi my name is Simon Jackson and I am the Managing Director of Saturn Machine Knives Ltd the home of Rotatech wood chipper blades, both are the same company but Rotatech is the brand and we have been manufacturing wood chipper blades in Sheffield since 2002.

So what constitutes a spurious wood chipper blade?

A spurious wood chipper blade is a blade that is not manufactured by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the wood chipper or is not produced to the same specifications as the OEM blade. These blades may be sold by third-party manufacturers as a replacement for the original blade, but they may not meet the same standards for quality, durability, and safety.

There are several factors that can contribute to a blade being considered spurious, including:

Material quality:

The blade may be made from inferior materials that are not as strong or durable as those used in the OEM blade.

Manufacturing process:

The blade may not be manufactured using the same processes and techniques as the OEM blade, which can lead to variations in quality and performance.

Design specifications:

The blade may not be designed to the same specifications as the OEM blade, which can affect its performance and safety.

Quality control:

The manufacturer may not have the same level of quality control measures in place as the OEM, which can result in defects or inconsistencies in the blade.

Using a spurious wood chipper blade can be dangerous as it may break or wear out more quickly than the OEM blade, leading to injury or damage to the chipper. It is important to use only OEM or high-quality replacement blades that meet the same specifications and standards as the original blade.

If you have any questions regarding Rotatech wood chipper blades I would like to answer them directly, I have extensive experience within the machine knife industry manufacturing wood chipper blades and Sawmill blades for over two decades. When deciding to buy your blades from a non OEM company ask the question are these blades made to the same OEM or High-Quality specifications.

Thank you.

Hi Simon,

Firstly, I’ve used your blades for years with no problems, just so we know where we are.

Some questions.

Is it true that you use steel from the same Uddeholm foundry as the OEM manufacturers? (Ie. The same raw material) traceable back to origin (bs5750 iirc)

Can you go through the manufacturing and hardening/tempering process with us on here, perhaps with pics? as I am interested.

In another life I was a salesman of metals to engineering firms so retain a penchant for this stuff.

Hi Mick, Glad to hear you use our blades what chipper are you operating now? Yes it's true we used Uddeholm for many years and we even got an invite to the mill in Sweden which was awesome but as the business grew so did our range of products and in many cases Uddeholm wasn't able to offer the sections we needed so we found alternative suppliers in Germany with huge inventories. Chipper blades are manufactured from Chipper Steel, that's the common terminology for this steel but it is actually called 1.2360 or Viking or A8 Modified all are the same chemical analysis but named differently. All adhere to ISO 9001 standard not the British Standards you mentioned above.  Most blades are manufactured to the same speciation's for this particular industry and heat treated (HT) to 56/58 Hrc (Rockwell Hardness) this hardness gives the blades the durability and hardwearing properties needed for this application. The science in this process (HT) is common knowledge, a company who wants to supply a High-Quality blade will vacuum heat treat and double temper every blade but this process can be done much cheaper if its done in a gas fired furnace. We outsource this process and follow the high-quality option every time. Manufacturing has moved on in leaps and bounds since I was at college and everything is so much faster, faster tools, faster inserts, faster setups the world is just super competitive and you have to be on top of your game if you're going to survive in this industry. I have attached an image of a fixture that I designed and made in house for bevelling the cutting edge for the 35/150 Timberwolf blades with the hollow bevel, we machine them on a CNC lathe 8 at a time. then we have a Stump Grinding Wheel.  Greenmech Disk blades. The Gockel grinders are what we use to finish all our blades on the flats, bevels and edges there isn't any blade we cant make her and that makes me super proud. If you are ever in the area Mick let me know and ill give you the guided tour I am sure you will find it interesting.
