Hi all. As the heading says, we're looking to replace an old Tirfor, used mostly to get a loaded Transit out of mud (or wet grass!). I was thinking there might be something runs off a 12v battery & could be anchored to a tree?

The PCW battery winch works well. Only demoed at a show but still impressive.

Treadlight Forestry will sell the Eder equivalent, assuming it exists, which I think it does.

If you're trying to run off 12v then you kind of need short wires, normal solution there is attach the winch to the vehicle. Otherwise you're going to have to carry the battery around which is less portable.

I got given something similar to this, thought it would be useful pulling the chipper up my sloped drive into the workshop when I’m knackered.

The pull is only about 750kg, and it moves at about an inch a minute.

There must be better options out there!

A bog standard vehicle winch is a better option for a vehicle but you can't also take that into a back garden to move stuff.

As said 12v portable winch is heavy and limited to how many pulls before battery go's flat. Winch on truck is best if truck is stuck but you still need something to anchor it to, i have pulled lots of root out in back garden with truck mounted winch with the aid of snatch blocks to change direction of pull.

Some with just straight pull

When I get the 461 van back from her protracted, and no doubt expensive refurb works, her be getting the proper transfer box mounted PTO offen the Black bollocks of the LWB car type that, because it was a MB demo vehicle, had this rather expensive optional extra fitted by MB.

To drive a hydraulic pump, with the oil resovoir in the well behind the seats, to provide hydraulics for a winch, et.al.
