you need to wait, it might even leaf again next year, but once the roots energy reserves are depleted it’ll die properly 

 

do you know what kind of tree it is?

 Why not remove the tree now, killing it only ends one way?

I once had a job of ring barking most of the Sycamore in a woodland for bat habitat .
