So is it the mesh or the strops that will stop root growth?
 

It hasn’t got feet, it has roots that will not be inhibited in spreading out by the strops.

That’s what I don’t understand mate they spend £600 per tree now they are dying very strange builders.

Are they possibly there as a bracing system? One photo shows a steel hawser with a made off eye, left in place till tree established then ratchet strap loosened off and possibly pulled out. As Mick say ratchet strap won’t stop root growing(they’ll grow around it) but will stop base of trunk developing much the same as a girdled root
