Advice needed for log burner to replace LPG combi-boiler please.

Hi all, looking to replace a LPG combi-boiler with a wood burning boiler stove. The property is a 2 bed barn conversion near Billingshurst. Don’t think it’s in a smoke control area. We’re looking for advice and a quote to install. We have access to a fair amount of wood and have enough space to dry and store it. Has anyone any reccommendations?

I think you will need hot water tank buffer tank and Lots of plumbing

a fair old pay back time if saving moneys the aim

we have log boiler and buffer tank coupled to oil boiler 

works well

alot of time and space both for fuel and equipment mind that’s for a bigger place

If he's keeping the oil boiler  then a buffer tank isn't that necessary  especially if he opts for under floor heating as the time constant on that will soak up fluctuations.

 

Also have a look at the irish heat hero system  which seems to offer a lot more functionality than  shared headers (like the dunsley neutraliser) and enables a larger pump to get the heat out of a wood boiler/stove, it sounds good but I have no experience of it.

I'm probably a bit biased but I think if your house suits it, then a good second-hand solid fuel cooker is the way to go.

 

Good big fire box, durable, good boiler output, will burn just about anything you put in it, very controlable, and bakes the best sponge cakes you'll ever eat.

 

Put in as big a hot water cylinder with it as you have room for, plus another feed for your existing radiators.

 

A bit of money to spend but not outrageous.

I'd probably keep the LPG and supplement if you can, there will be times like when you get back from holiday or if you're ill that you just want to press a button and have heat.

I'm in the process of fitting a used eco Angus 18kw log biomass boiler with a 1000liter thermal store. I will be connecting it up to my combi boiler system. I plan to isolate whatever heat source I'm not using with valves.

If you plumb the original boiler after the mixing valve for the akvatherm outputs you can use a two/three port valve.

 

So when say the oil is running it heats the radiator circuit and not the buffer tank.

Yeah that's the plan. I can't seem to find the correct 3 way valve for what I want to use it for so might just use separate isolating valves.

Something like this is probably what you want.

You'd probably need to do a bit of research into how to do Combi connections, might be easier to keep the oil for the hot water and run the radiators seperate?.

 

But from experience, having more full bore lever valves is never a bad thing. Worse case you just remove the levers to prevent accidents.
